Wholesale Supplier for Subscription Box Companies

A subscription box is the only retail business that has to buy for a customer who has already paid and cannot see what they are getting. That single fact changes every buying decision. A shop that misjudges an order gets slow stock. A box that misjudges an order gets cancellations, and cancellations compound.

American General Distributors supplies factory-sealed, genuine branded stock to subscription box companies, curated box operators, gift box businesses and monthly club services across the United States.

Why box buying is not shop buying

Four differences, and they all point the same way.

You buy exact quantities, not approximate ones. A shop that buys 10% too many has slow stock. A box that buys 10% too few has subscribers who did not get their box, which is the one failure the model does not survive.

You buy for a date that cannot move. Subscribers expect the box in a window, every month. Your ordering calendar is fixed by that, not by when a price is good.

Variety is the product. A shop can sell the same items forever. A box that repeats too soon loses the reason the subscriber pays.

Your customer cannot substitute. If an item is unavailable, the shop shopper picks something else. Your subscriber gets whatever you put in the box, so a substitution is a decision you have to make and defend.

Buying against a subscriber count

Work from three numbers, in this order: your confirmed subscriber count, your expected new signups for the month, and a buffer for damages, replacements and the boxes you will send to fix a complaint.

Most box operators under-buy the buffer, because it feels like waste. It is not — it is the difference between resolving a damaged-item complaint in one email and losing a subscriber. A modest overage on a cheap item is far cheaper than a churned customer.

Buy the whole run at once. Splitting a month’s requirement across two orders to save cash almost always costs more, because availability moves with the manufacturer and the second half may simply not exist by the time you go back.

What works well in a box

Our range is health and household, beauty and personal care, perfume, home and kitchen, grocery and gourmet, pet supplies and trading cards — which covers most of the themes boxes are actually built around.

  • Beauty and personal care — the most established box category, and the one where variety is easiest to sustain month to month.
  • Fragrance — works as the recognisable higher-value item that justifies the box price in the subscriber’s mind.
  • Health and household — strong for wellness and self-care themes, and deep enough to avoid repetition.
  • Grocery and gourmet — good for snack and treat boxes, with the tightest dating requirements of anything we carry.
  • Pet supplies — dog and cat boxes are one of the most durable subscription categories there is.
  • Trading cards — sealed product is unusually well suited to a box, because the subscriber gets the opening experience as well as the item.

Dating, and the rule that protects you

Dating is stricter for a box than for a shelf, and the reason is timing. Your subscriber receives the item weeks after you bought it, opens it later still, and uses it over the following months.

The rule: the remaining shelf life must comfortably outlast your packing date, your shipping time, and a reasonable period of use afterwards. An item that would be perfectly saleable in a shop can be wrong for a box on dating alone.

Ask us for the dating before you commit. We confirm it on the stock allocated to your order, and on a box run it is worth confirming every time rather than assuming.

Weight, size and shipping economics

Every item you choose is a shipping cost multiplied by your subscriber count, which means a heavy item is a decision about your margin rather than about your curation.

Work out the shipping band your box has to stay inside before you choose the contents, not after. A single dense item can push an entire run into the next band, and at scale that costs more than the item was ever worth.

Fragility matters for the same reason. A glass item that arrives broken costs you the unit, the replacement, the shipping on both, and a subscriber who now expects breakage.

Sealed product and why it suits the model

Every unit we ship is factory-sealed in original manufacturer packaging. We do not open, repackage, relabel or break sealed cases.

For a box operator that is exactly right. Your subscriber is opening the box themselves, and a sealed item reads as new and untouched in a way that nothing else does. It also removes the tampering question entirely, which matters on anything a person will put on their skin or eat.

Claims, inserts and what you write on the card

Most boxes include a card describing what is inside. Treat that card as a label. If the packaging does not make a health or benefit claim, your insert should not make one either — and this is where box operators most often get into trouble, because the insert feels like marketing copy rather than product labelling.

Describe what the item is. Let the manufacturer’s own packaging make any claims it makes.

Planning a year, not a month

The operators who buy well are planning three months ahead and ordering two. That gives you room to move when something is unavailable, and it stops you from building a theme around an item you have not confirmed you can get.

Tell us your themes in advance and we will tell you what we expect to hold, which is far more useful than asking what is in stock the week you need it.

The $5,000 minimum order value

Our minimum order value is $5,000. It applies to the whole order rather than to any single product, and you can mix freely across everything we carry to reach it.

For a box operator this rarely constrains anything, because a single month’s run across several items usually passes it comfortably. If you are still building your subscriber base and a month’s run falls below $5,000, contact our team by email or WhatsApp chat and we will look at it with you. Questions about minimum quantities on a specific product are answered the same way, because those quantities move with the manufacturer.

Paperwork before your first order

Wholesale accounts are for businesses buying for resale. Before your first order we will ask for your EIN and a valid resale certificate for your state. Have both ready when you register.

Ordering, payment and despatch

Orders are settled by ACH bank transfer, which is our recommended method. Wire transfer and card payment through Plastiq are available on request — contact our team and we will set that up.

Stock is despatched 3–5 business days after payment clears, from stock held in the United States, with tracking as soon as it ships. Build that window into your packing calendar rather than into your hopes. We supply across the USA and internationally, including Canada, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Australia, Europe, Singapore, Korea and Japan.

Common questions from box operators

Can you hold a repeat quantity for next month?
Tell us your calendar and we will tell you what we expect to hold. Availability moves with the manufacturer, so early notice is worth more than a large single order.

Will you confirm dating before I pay?
Yes, on the stock allocated to your order.

Do you pack or fulfil boxes?
No. We supply the stock at wholesale; the curation and packing are yours.

Can you supply the same item across several months?
Ask early. On a multi-month commitment we would rather tell you honestly what is realistic than take the first order and disappoint the third.

Opening a wholesale account

Tell us your subscriber count, your themes for the next quarter, and the shipping band your box has to stay inside. We will build against those three things rather than sending a general catalogue.
