A salon buys twice over. There is the stock consumed in the chair — the product used on a client, the towels, the sanitation, the disposables — and there is the retail shelf by the till, which is usually the most profitable square metre in the building and the one most often left half empty.
American General Distributors supplies factory-sealed, genuine branded beauty, personal care and perfume stock to hair and beauty salons, nail bars, day spas, barbershops, medi-spa retail counters and beauty resellers across the United States. Beauty and personal care plus perfume is one of our deepest ranges.
The retail shelf, and why it underperforms
Almost every salon knows the retail shelf should earn more than it does. The reasons repeat across the trade.
Too many items, no depth. A shelf with one of everything looks picked over within a week and gives the client nothing to choose between. Three facings of six items beats one facing of eighteen.
Bought retail, sold retail. A salon that restocks by buying single units when something runs out has no margin left to make. Wholesale only works if you buy ahead of the shortage.
Sold cold. The retail sale that closes is the one the client just watched happen in the chair. The shelf should hold what your team actually uses, not a separate range chosen from a catalogue.
What sells at a salon till
Retail at a salon is a recommendation, not a display. The strongest sellers are the small, repeatable items the client will finish and replace: care products, personal care, and small perfume and fragrance items that work as a gift purchase as well as a personal one.
Fragrance deserves a specific mention. Perfume is one of our largest categories, and it sells at a beauty counter for a reason a general store cannot match — the client is already in a mood to buy something for themselves, and the price point sits comfortably above a routine retail item.
Back-of-house: the basket nobody budgets for
Back-of-house consumption is where a salon quietly spends more than it plans to. Sanitation and disinfection, hand care for staff who wash constantly, cleaning, laundry, paper and disposables, washroom stock. Most of it is bought in small quantities from whatever is nearest.
Our health and household range covers that basket, and putting it in the same order as your retail stock is what makes wholesale buying worthwhile for a single-site salon. One order, one invoice, one delivery, wholesale pricing on both halves of the business.
Day spas, medi-spa counters and multi-room sites
A spa consumes far more back-of-house than a salon and usually has more storage to work with. That changes the buying rhythm rather than the basket: buy a quarter of sanitation and linen-adjacent consumables at a time, and keep the retail counter on a shorter cycle so it stays current.
If you run several sites, buy centrally and split locally. One order that clears the minimum and breaks down across locations is nearly always better than each site ordering alone, because the smaller sites stop being priced as small buyers.
Barbershops and nail bars
Smaller footprint, shorter retail range, higher consumable turnover. The winning approach is a very short retail selection — grooming and care items your clients ask about — bought with real depth, plus a standing order for the sanitation and disposables you get through weekly.
Beauty resellers and online sellers
If you resell beauty and fragrance rather than run a salon, the constraints change. Dating matters on anything with an active ingredient. Damage in transit matters on glass and fragrance. And condition disputes are the most common cause of a return, which is why sealed manufacturer packaging is not a detail.
Every unit we ship is factory-sealed. We do not repackage, decant, relabel or break sealed cases.
Genuine stock, and how to check anyone selling to you
Beauty and fragrance attract more counterfeit and diverted stock than almost any other consumer category. Whoever you buy from, ask the same questions: is it factory-sealed in manufacturer packaging, can they tell you the dating, and will they put the answer in writing before you pay. A supplier who will not answer those three questions has told you something.
We supply genuine branded stock, factory-sealed, and we will confirm dating on the specific stock allocated to your order.
Storage
Fragrance and active beauty products dislike heat and light more than almost anything else you will store. Keep stock cool, dry and out of direct sun, and do not keep back stock on a windowsill or above a heat source. A salon that stores fragrance well can hold it for a season; one that does not will find it has changed.
The $5,000 minimum order value
Our minimum order value is $5,000. It applies to the whole order rather than to any single product, and you can mix freely across everything we carry to reach it.
For a single salon, the retail shelf on its own will not usually reach $5,000, and that is the point of mixing. A first order that combines a season of retail and fragrance with a quarter of sanitation, cleaning, paper and washroom stock clears the minimum without over-buying anything.
If your order will come in below $5,000, contact our team by email or WhatsApp chat and we will look at it with you. Questions about minimum quantities on a specific product are answered the same way, because those quantities move with the manufacturer.
Paperwork before your first order
Wholesale accounts are for businesses buying for resale or professional use. Before your first order we will ask for your EIN and a valid resale certificate for your state. Have both ready when you register — it is the step that most often holds up a first order.
Ordering, payment and despatch
Orders are settled by ACH bank transfer, which is our recommended method. Wire transfer and card payment through Plastiq are available on request — contact our team and we will set that up.
Stock is despatched 3–5 business days after payment clears, from stock held in the United States, with tracking as soon as it ships. We supply across the USA and internationally, including Canada, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Australia, Europe, Singapore, Korea and Japan.
Common questions from salon and spa buyers
Is the stock genuine and sealed?
Yes. Factory-sealed in manufacturer packaging, genuine branded product.
Can I buy retail stock only?
Yes, if the order reaches $5,000. Most single-site salons combine retail with back-of-house consumables instead.
Do you supply professional-use-only or licensed products?
We supply consumer retail product. Tell our team what you need and we will say plainly whether we carry it.
Will you confirm dating before I pay?
Yes, on the stock allocated to your order.
Opening a wholesale account
Tell us what you use in the chair and what your clients ask to take home, and we will build a first order around both rather than sending a general catalogue.
